Longtime Santa Barbara resident, Anne Elyse Selzer, passed away in her Portesuello Avenue home on September 9, at the age of 68. She was born in Vancouver, B.C., on April 12, 1958. She emigrated to Southern California with her parents Anna and Max Selzer and siblings Stephanie, Terry and Max. The family settled in Carpenteria for a few years before building a Santa Barbara home on Las Alturas Avenue -- a site on the Riviera with spectacular views of sunrise and sunset. Anne studied nursing at SBCC and started her nursing career at Cottage Hospital in 1986. A year later, she began her career as an OR nurse at St. Francis Hospital, moving up through the ranks to become Director of Nursing. In 2000, she opened a new surgical center in Santa Barbara. Anne's ever-modest demeanor belied a host of skills and talents. She was a fine tennis player and an accomplished wind surfer. She was a remarkable baker and all around chef and dinner party hostess; her Thanksgiving turkey gravy was savored and sought after by friends who brought empty jars to her annual feast in the hopes of leaving with more helpings of gravy. She was a wicked player of wordle, running up 1400 straight successes without ever busting. She was a world traveler whose outings included two African safaris, boat trips down the Rhine and Danube Rivers, and visits to Ireland, where she enjoyed fishing the annual mayfly "Dap" on Lough Corrib and landing trout on a fly. She cut a most appealing figure in a dirndl and was known to dance many a night away. Her Canadian roots were an integral part of her life. Her parents emigrated to Canada from Ukraine and Germany after WWII. Anne's Canadian cousins all settled in Alberta, but frequent visits north and south of the border were a cherished thread in their lives. Having a good time was a given. Bottoms up was a companion to her Canadian-instilled elbows up. Anne never met a bully she didn't back down, nor a friend she didn't defend. She was brave, forever kind, funny, even-keeled despite a family tragedy and fearless; a sunbeam in a dark world. She was twice married and divorced. She is survived by her brother Max, of Santa Barbara, her son Anton Selzer of Arroyo Grande and her longtime partner, Denis O'Neill
